DE LAMAR MANSION
233 MADISON AVENUE

THIS IMPRESSIVE MURRAY HILL MANSION WAS BUILT FOR JOSEPH RAPHAEL DE LAMAR IN 1902-05. BORN IN AMSTERDAM, DE LAMAR IMMIGRATED TO THE UNITED STATES IN THE LATE 1870S, WHERE HE MADE A CONSIDERABLE FORTUNE IN MINING AND OTHER BUSINESSES. DESIGNED IN THE BEAUX ARTS STYLE BY THE NOTED RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECT C. P. H. GILBERT, THE MANSION HAS A BANDED GRANITE FACADE THAT RISES TO A STEEPLY PITCHED MANSARD ROOF. OF PARTICULAR NOTE IS THE HANDSOME RECESSED ENTRANCE, WITH DOUBLE OAK DOORS SURMOUNTED BY WHITE MARBLE PUTTI. FOLLOWING DE LAMAR'S DEATH IN 1918, IT BECAME THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC CLUB, WHICH OWNED THE BUILDING UNTIL 1973, WHEN IT WAS PURCHASED BY THE REPUBLIC OF POLAND. THE BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED A NEW YORK CITY LANDMARK IN 1975.
