“Take pride in whatever you are doing. You're the best there is.”

These were words spoken by one of uottawa's most talented and well-loved coaches, Matt Anthony. For 15 years, he nurtured and inspired student-athletes. In his years as the coach of the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees football team, he never knew a losing season and led the garnet and grey to undefeated years in 1960 and 1965. He coached the Gee-Gees to 11 wins in 14 tries for the Pedro Panda, the time-honoured prize of that era for the annual game and intense rivalry with the Carleton University Ravens.

In the late 1940s and the 1950s, Matt Anthony played professional football for Montreal, Ottawa and Saskatchewan. Throughout his coaching years at the University of ottawa, he groomed a number of players for the Canadian Football League and always took a personal interest in the lives of his players and other student-athletes, contributing in meaningful ways to their academic and personal success.

The Matt Anthony Field honours an important figure in our institution's history who personified the University's overall mission to develop the whole person in mind, body and spirit.
