The plaque reads: Engineers. Robert Stephenson C.E. Thomas E. Harrison C.E. Contractors for iron work Hawks, Crawshay & Sons. 1850 A second plaque was added recently documenting the major strengthening and conservation work undertaken between 2001 and 2008 for Network Rail under the consulting engineers, Mott MacDonald. Hawks, Crawshay & Sons were the best known heavy engineering firm in Gateshead. In 1827 William Hawks (Snr) & Co, were manufacturing wrought and cast iron, chain cable, anchors, steam engine and boilers at Gateshead Iron Works, New Woolwich Link George and Edmund Crawshay took over the Gateshead works in the 1840s.
