Lowland and Upland Architecture

Many sugar cane plantation houses in the Gulf Coast region have a distinct Creole design. They are defined by large galleries. a hipped roof, asymmetrical rooms, double doors, and lack of hall ways. In contrast the homes of American cotton planters  in the Upland region were smaller and reflected the Classic Greek Revival architectural style. They emphasized symmetry and included a large center hall, gabled roof, and porches with columns.
