Two plaques at the side of the fans' tribute ST1974 : Torchwood Shrine, Mermaid Quay. Ianto Jones is (was) a fictional character in the BBC television series “Torchwood” (part of the Doctor Who franchise) which was filmed, in part, at Mermaid Quay. Ianto died in a confrontation with an alien species known as “the 456” in the Torchwood mini-series “Children of Earth” which was first broadcast in 2009. The top plaque reads: IANTO JONES 1983 – 2009 TORCHWOOD 3 GAVE HIS LIFE IN DEFENCE OF THE CHILDREN OF THIS PLANET. THE MANAGEMENT OF MERMAID QUAY SALUTES YOU
