Guadalcanal Memorial

The Guadalcanal Memorial overlooks the town of Honiara in the Solomon Islands.  It honors the Americans and Allies who lost their lives from August 7, 1942 to February 9, 1943 taking Guadalcanal from the Japanese in an intricate series of battles in the air as well as on the sea and ground.  Control of this air base helped to keep sea access open between the U.S. and Australia during WWII.  The people I met in the Solomon Islands were grateful to the U.S. and very happy to see us.
