George Henry Reifel

This memorial has been placed by the British Columbia Waterfowl Society in memory of

GEORGE HENRY REIFEL

July 22, 1922 - March 7, 1992

An avid sportsman and conservationist, George H. Reifel leased this property to the British Columbia Waterfowl Society in 1963 for the creation of the George H. Reifel Waterfowl Refuge in memory of his father and immediate family.

In 1972, he gifted this property and the adjoining foreshore area to the government of Canada on two conditions: the property had to remain a waterfowl refuge in perpetuity and it would always carry his father's name.

The Reifel family home built in 1929 and the surrounding farmlands are now administered by the Canadian Wildlife Service and form part of the Alaksen National Wildlife Area.

With his generous gift to the crown, George H. Reifel has shared his passion for this place and migratory waterfowl with future generations.
