This plaque sits well above any viewer's head on a stone wall right near a staircase that leads up to the famous Sacré Coeur in Montmartre. It reads:
"Ici était l'entrée des carrières de Montmartre où furent découverts les ossements fossiles qui servirent en 1798 aux étudies de Cuvier créateur de la paléontologie."
Roughly translated, it says:
"Here was the entrance of the Montmartre quarries where fossilized bones were discovered in 1798. They were used in the studies of Cuvier, creator of paleontology."
