A plaque commemorating the location of the Deas Island Cannery, established by John Sullivan Deas in 1873. Deas was a tinsmith by trade, part of the migration of blacks who arrived in British Columbia from California in the 1850s. He began working as a tinsmith, making cans for other salmon canners, and later became an owner.
