The Bay Area once lead the world in the export of salmon. In nineteenth-century San Francisco, more than a dozen companies were involved in packing and distributing salmon harvested from Alaskan waters. under the leadership of Henry F. Fortmann, several independent operators merged in 1893 to form the Alaska Packers Association - the world's largest producer of canned salmon.
In 1905, the Association established its mooring and maintenance facility on the Alameda waterfront near Grand Street, not far from this spot.
