This historical 17th street Farmers Market is one of the many historical establishments in Richmond, VA. It is in the home of Shockoe Bottom, which was one of the largest slave trading community in Virginia. The Farmers Market was opened in 1780 and sold many produce such as vegetables and fruits. The Farmers Market is significant because during the times of the Civil War in 1854, political speeches were held there, it was a gathering for union troops, police station and even religious revival meetings were held there as well. The Farmers market was burned down and shut down, but today it is open and operating as a traditional Farmers Market owned by two sisters who are the 4th generation of running the Farmers Market.
