Camp Independence soldiers needed a road to Waugoba-Deep Spring. In 1873, J.S. 'Scott' Broder completed this road and collected tolls until 1900. In 1913, A.L. Westgaard led an American Automobile Assn. tour across here, seeking a new transcontinental route. State took over road in 1925.

Addendum: The site is in Big Pine, California, and the Westgaard Pass route is now the road into the White Mountains and their fabled bristlecone pine groves. Go if you get a chance.
