Victoria Fire Department Headquarters, 1899 - 1959

This sign contains information about the headquarters of the Victoria Fire Department, which was nearby between 1899 and 1959. It complements another nearby sign that contains information about an earlier volunteer fire company and a memorial to Victoria fire fighters who died in the line of duty. It also contains a map showing what the area looked like in 1903, and is one of the few signs that explicitly refers to the urban renewal project that resulted in Centennial Square in the mid-1960s.

For more information, the standard history of Victoria's fire department is Dave Parker's First Water, Tigers! The Victoria Fire Department, 1858-2008, published by the Victoria Fire Department Historical Society in 2008.
