Tiananmen Square Memorial Plaque

 IN MEMORY OF

THOSE WHO DIED IN TIENANMEN

SQUARE IN JUNE, 1989

This plaque is virtually invisible until you're standing on top of it, located in the Great Court at the University of Queensland. The university newspaper, Semper Floreat, had this to say about it in the edition of May 1994:

In the middle of the Great Court there is a small tree next to a plaque planted half a decade ago when the sound of the gunfire from Tiananmen Square was fresher in our minds. As Australians, and Australian university students especially, we have the right to gather, speak and criticise without fear of reprisal. So this June 4 stop by the little tree in the Great Court that is our memorial to the dead students of Tiananmen Square, and remember our fellow students to the north who gave their lives for something which we take for granted.

It's worth mentioning that the Great Court itself has historically been a site of student protest. The tree mentioned is no longer there
