This historic marker memorializes the first manufacturing site of the Slinky, one of the top selling toys of the 20th Century, in Clifton Heights, Pennsylvania. Slinky was invented by mechanical engineer Robert James in 1943, when he was working at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. His wife Betty made Slinky one of the most popular toys of all-time after Robert left her and their six children to join a religious cult in Bolivia, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer in an article by Stephanie Farr published August 30, 2019.
