THE CATHEDRAL CHURCH OF ST. JOHN THE DIVINE
THIS EDIFICE SERVES THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH AS
THE CATHEDRAL OF THE BISHOP OF NEW YORK.
THE CORNERSTONE WAS LAID ON DECEMBER 27, 1892,
AND THE FIRST SERVICE WAS HELD IN 1899 IN
THE CRYPT BENEATH THE CHOIR. HEINS AND
LA FARGE, THE ORIGINAL ARCHITECTS, WERE
SUCCEEDED BY CRAM AND FERGUSON IN 1911
AND THE PRIOR ROMANESQUE PLANS WERE
TRANSFORMED TO A GOTHIC DESIGN.
