SUNSET THEATRE - 1934

Built by architects Olof Anderson
and John H. Stromberg the
Sunset Theatre originally opened
the 6th December 1934. In its
hey-day the Sunset has been a
movie theatre, British Columbia's
first gambling hall (the Dominion Club), and
following the mine explosion of 1948 was even
used as a morgue. In the 1970's the Wells
Historical Society leased the building and for a
brief time, played movies and hosted concerts.
After years of decline and disrepair the building
was purchased from the Crown in 1999 by
Karen Planden. Along with her husband David
Jeffery, a restoration journey was embarked
upon with the Sunset emerging beyond its
former splendour. In 2005 the doors
re-opened with the vision to produce, present
and inspire professional theatre from Canada
and around the world.
