Richard Byrn memorial, Mount Victoria

“THE STONES ON THIS WALL ARE FROM THE KOETTLITZ GLACIER REGION, CAPE HALLETT, AND CAPE EVANS ANTARCTICA.”

Richard Byrd was a polar explorer who used New Zealand as a base for Antarctic exploration for almost 30 years. It sits near the summit of Mount Victoria, Wellington. A bust of Byrd faces due South, to look on Antarctica, and sits under the form of a polar tent made from Antarctic stone. New Zealand, and explorers based there, have a long history with the frozen continent.
