Preservation of Atomic Bomb Dome

PRESERVATION OF THE ATOMIC BOMB DOME

March 1990  The City of Hiroshima intends to preserve the A-bomb Dome forever.  Two reinforcement projects have been undertaken so far, in 1987 and in 1990.  In both instances, generous contributions were received from peace-loving people here and around the world.  The recent project received more than enough donations to cover expenses.  With these donations, the City of Hiroshima has established an A-bomb Dome Preservation Fund to assist with future projects as required.

March 2003  The 3rd preservation project to maintain the A-bomb Dome was completed in March 2003.  This was the first construction undertaken on the Dome since it was registered as a World Heritage site in December 1996.  A portion of the A-bomb Dome Preservation Fund was allotted to fund this preservation work.

July 2016  Seismic retrofitting was completed in July 2016 for the 4th preservation project on the A-bomb Dome.  A portion of the A-bomb Dome Preservation Fund was allotted for the construction fees.
