In 1936, Phyllis Pearsall produced the first London A-Z Atlas. She had walked the city for 18 hours a day & compiled a 23,000 card index of streets, kept in shoeboxes under her bed. Unable to find a publisher, she founded the Geographers' A to Z Map Co.
