Perronkap Utrecht Centraal

The plaque tells the story of the old railway station roof. In Dutch: perronkap. The iron roof was constructed in 1895. In 1968, when the station (Utrecht central station) was replaced by a new building integrated in the shopping mall "Hoog Catharijne", a  part of the roof was demolished, and with a renovation in 1987. When it became clear that with the creation of a whole new central station the last parts of the old roof were to go, the people of Utrecht protested. The city council decided that it should be saved for a new destination. The part that was in best condition (platforms 8-9) were placed here in a new part of Utrecht, at the square "Berlijnplein". It serves as a meeting place and to hold events and activities.  Submitted by Danny.
