Gateway National Recreation Area is the primary steward of Jamaica Bay, home to a complex of wetlands and uplands that support a large diversity of both native and migratory fish, birds and other wildlife. In addition to providing critical habitat for wildlife, the wetlands of Jamaica Bay also provide important services for humans: marshes act as a protective barrier against storm surges and shore erosion, while improving water quality by absorbing pollutants.

Jamaica Bay is the largest expanse of sheltered open-space in the region, and one of the finest opportunities for paddle sports in the northeast United States. From short introductory trips lasting less than an hour detailed excursions into the channels among the delicate marsh islands or more experienced paddlers navigating around the tip of the Rockaway Peninsula for some ocean kayaking Jamaica Bay has something for every level.
