The plaque reads "Oregon Power Company Springfield Substation

1911

This property was bought from W.M. Sutton in January 1911 for $3,500. It was built that same year to be used as a distribution substation in order to provide electricity to the community. The electric power was generated by steam-driven turbines in a power plant across the railroad tracks. Although the electric equipment has been removed, there are still visible remnants of the transformers on the interior walls. In 1918, Northern Idaho & Montana Power Co. sold it to Mountain States for $797.23. Their successor was Pacific Power and Light Company. In September of 1981, it opened as the Springfield Museum. The building stands as a testimony to the coming of electric power to Springfield."
