THE CABILDO
SITE ACTIVE LATE 1790s–1811
Bankruptcy and probate cases
were decided in the Cabildo's
courtroom. When slaveholders
failed to pay their debts or
died without a will, their
assets—including people they
owned—were sold, often
resulting in the separation of
families and communities.
