John Gaston

French immigrant John Gaston opened Gaston's Hotel here in 1883. The hotel was a popular stay for celebrities, most notably Oscar Wilde. Gaston's second wife Teresa, who was also his step-daughter from a previous marriage, used the fortune he made in the hotel business to found John Gaston Hospital after his death in 1912.

Submitted from the Shelby County Register's Office.
