James Root House

James Root House 
1860 
Once surrounded by beehives and pear 
orchards, this Victorian-Queen Anne Cottage 
was built by Joel Haden Boone, descendant 
of Daniel Boone. Joel married Sophie, 
daughter of pioneer Robert Beatty Love. 
Daughter Ina Boone married James Root. 
Their children Austin, Jim, Cora, Sarah, and 
Harold were raised here. One winter the creek 
overflowed so they rowed their boat a mile 
across a field to their grandparent's house.
