Inscribed plaque on the Union Chain Bridge

The inscribed plaque is mounted to wall of the tower on the English side of the bridge. The text reads: UNION SUSPENSION BRIDGE DESIGNED AND EXECUTED BY CAPT S BROWN. R. N. OPENED IN 1820 IMPROVED AND STRENGTHENED IN 1902-3 BY THE TWEED BRIDGES TRUSTEES WATSON ASKEW ROBERTSON ESQ D.L. OF PALLINSBURN AND LADYKIRK. CHAIRMAN. S.SANDERSON. D.L. CLERK TO TRUSTEES. J.A. BEAN. ENGINEER TO THE TRUSTEES.
