Hiroshima Bridge Newel

This inscription plate of the bridge’s name was formerly set into a newel post (shown on the right) of the Aioi Bridge when it was partially repaired in 1949.  The black granite slates around this monument are also from the former newel post.

 

The picture on the left shows the bridge’s newel post which was built in 19?? And was in use until 1949.  The photo below shows the Aioi Bridge and its surrounding ? in October 1945, two months after the atomic bombing.
