This plaque provides a map for visitors to the Hólavallagarður cemetery in central Reykjavik. The cemetery was constructed in 1838; as of 1932 all plots had been reserved. It is Icelandic tradition that the first person buried in a graveyard becomes the caretaker, watching over the dead the follow. The Hólavallagarður guardian is Guðrln Oddsdóttir who died November 23, 1838. Her grave can be seen here: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=116578075.
More about the cemetery can be found here.
