Gouldsboro Railcar Transfer Ferry

This plaque lies in the grass next to a bike path that runs along the “west bank” of the Mississippi River from Algiers Point to Gretna, across the river from New Orleans. The trail is atop the levy, between the river and the still-functioning railroad tracks. One passenger ferry still runs in the area, between Algiers Point and the base of Canal St., but sadly doesn’t transport rail cars.

The plaque is titled “Gouldsboro Rail Car Transfer Ferry” and reads “Ferry operated from 1898 to 1942 with two transfer boats. One, the Gouldsboro, named for railroad magnate Jay Gould, was built in 1863 as the Federal Monitor Chickasaw and saw action at the battle of Mobile Bay. 2004″
