CUT OFF CIRCA LATE 1850'S TRACES OF A"CUT OFF" CANAL LINKING BAYOU LAFOURCHE WITH LAKE SALVADOR CAN BE SEEN TODAY. THOUGH NEVER SERVING ITS INTENDED PURPOSE AS A SHORT CUT TO NEW ORLANS, THE CANAL DID HELP DRAIN OFF THE SPRING OVERFLOWS FROM BAYOU LAFOURCHE. IT IS THIS CANAL WHICH GAVE THE EAST BANK OF BAYOU LAFOURCHE ITS NAME AND EVENTUALLY THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY WAS NAMED CUT OFF. THE TOWN BECAME MORE POPULATED AFTER THE CHENIERE HURRICANE THAT DESTROYED CHENIERE - CAMINADA IN 1893 WHEN ABOUT TWO HUNDRED REFUGEES SETTLED IN THIS AERA.
